Dan Rather: Evening News Isn't What It Used To Be

Dan Rather suggested that evening news anchors are losing their relevance during an appearance on HuffPost Live Friday.

Rather sat down for a wide-ranging interview, and was asked if the "authoritative anchorman" is dead in the current media landscape. "I don't think it's dead, but I do think it's ailing," he replied.

He pointed to CBS News' Scott Pelley and NBC News' Brian Williams, saying, "They still are seen as authoritative, but not nearly as was the case as in the times of Ed Murrow, Walter Cronkite, or yes, even Dan Rather or Peter Jennings or Tom Brokaw."

HuffPost Live host Ahmed Shihab-Eldin asked Rather how it is possible for anchors to remain authoritative when they sometimes become the story, and pulled up HuffPost Media's groundbreaking story about Pelley's physique. The splash headline was "PECTACULAR."

"I hadn't seen that. I don't think of Scott as muscling his way into anything," Rather said, laughing, "But i'm sure he likes it so I applaud it."
