A man was arrested and charged with attempted murder after allegedly attacking his wife with a meat cleaver on Sunday.

The brutal attack happened in broad daylight and was recorded by a surveillance camera.

Firefighters at a Canal Street firehouse across the street from the incident were among witnesses who say 28-year-old Ming Guang Huang appeared outside, dragging his wife, striking her several times witha meat cleaver before firefighter Jose Ortiz was able to help.

"I’m thinking I’ve got got to grab this guy’s arm, but I’m trying not to get hit myself," Ortiz said. "He was not a big guy, only about 5-foot-5, but the cleaver made him a little taller."

Firefighter Shane Clarke, who helped Ortiz subdue Huang, described the assault as "the craziest thing" he had ever seen besides the World Trade Center attack.

Huang was arrested and charged with attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and harassment, according to NBC.

ABC reports the victim was covered in blood and ran away in shock. Firefighters had to catch her in order to treat her for her wounds.

She was taken to Bellevue Hospital where she is in critical, but stable condition.
