After the documentary about his life and music won an Oscar Sunday, Detroit musician Sixto Rodriguez's first performance will be in his hometown.

"Searching for Sugar Man," the documentary that took home an award Sunday, was directed by Malik Bendjelloul. It follows two men's quest to find Rodriguez who, despite his lack of recognition in the U.S., was a near mythic musician in South Africa, revered for his protest songs.

The film has helped Rodriguez gain recent attention beyond the Cass Corridor. He played at the Old Miami in Detroit in September, and also performed a sold-out show at the Crofoot in Pontiac in November and appeared at the Ann Arbor Folk Festival, according to the Oakland Press.

Rodriguez performs at 8 p.m. on May 18 at the Masonic Temple in Detroit, presented by the Crofoot Ballroom.

Tickets go on sale for the Masonic Temple performance at 10 a.m. Friday on Ticketmaster.
