Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen Break Up: Couple Split After 2 Years Together

There is new hope that Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling could one day be an item again, because the actress has broken things off with her boyfriend of more than two years, Michael Sheen.

Sources confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple, who met on the set of "Midnight in Paris," have ended their romance.

The pair first took their romance public in October 2010, when they were spotted at a Toronto Film Festival after-party together, and later seen holding hands at an art exhibit.

No reason for the split has been reported, but both parties had previously gushed about their partner. Sheen, 44, told People magazine that McAdams was "talented, intelligent, beautiful. She's warm and friendly. She's very supportive, and very kind, very funny. She makes me laugh a lot," he told the magazine when the couple finally admitted they were dating in May 2011.

The split comes as a surprise since it appeared as though the couple knew how to make things work. In January 2012, the 34-year-old actress told Stella magazine that the secret to her successful relationship with Sheen was to spend sufficient time together, saying "Michael and I never spend more than three weeks apart ... but you have to be quite adaptable in this business whether you are in a relationship or not."

Before dating McAdams, Sheen was with actress Kate Beckinsale for eight years, with whom he has a 14-year-old daughter, while McAdams dated her "The Notebook" co-star Ryan Gosling for two years, and was engaged to him for a short time before breaking up in 2007.

Now that McAdams is back on the market, Gosling just needs to end things with Eva Mendes and order can once again be restored.
