While it seems like there's a new crazy, jaw-dropping buzzer beater made every other day, this one from the Section 1 Class AA championship game in White Plains, N.Y. might top all of them.
Mt. Vernon led by two points with 2.9 seconds remaining when New Rochelle's Khalil Edney inbounded the ball under his own basket. Edney tried connecting with one of his teammates beyond half court but his pass was intercepted. With the clock ticking, the Mt. Vernon player who stole the ball then tried passing to a teammate. As the commentators readied for the Mt. Vernon win, Edney intercepted that pass and launched a 55-footer.
"And Mt. Vernon is going to hold on and win... Well hold one one second, OHHHH!" screamed the announcer.
Swish. All of that happened in 2.9 seconds.
According to MSGVarsity.com, the officials initially ruled that the shot was no good even as New Rochelle celebrated on the court. That initial ruling caused Mt. Vernon to celebrate as well. But after the refs deliberated, they ruled that the shot counted and New Rochelle won.
"They're counting it. Absolutely pandemonium!" the commentator yelled.
The replay showed that Edney did let go of the ball with 0.1 seconds left on the clock,
“We ran the play where we get the ball to halfcourt, but they were doubling Joe [Clarke],” said Edney, via the Mount Vernon Daily Voice. “They got the ball and threw it back to their basket to one of his teammates. I had to get the shot off as fast as I could.”
