Nearly a foot of snow is expected to hit the Chicago area starting early Tuesday morning.

Much of Northern Illinois is under a winter storm warning and the city's south and southwest suburbs are under a winter storm watch beginning 3 a.m. Tuesday and continuing through midnight Wednesday morning, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The storm system is expected to dump between 5 and 10 inches of snow falling at a rate of an inch per hourly at some points early Tuesday. The snowfall is expected to be the most intense later Tuesday morning into the afternoon, according to the Chicago Weather Center.

According to CBS Chicago, the largest snowfall totals in the Chicago area are expected to be in the city's northwestern suburbs in Rockford and McHenry County.

Prior to the storm's arrival, a smaller band of light snow is expected to arrive in Chicago earlier Monday.

NBC Chicago points out that the snow -- which could be the city's biggest snowstorm of this season -- is coming at a time when many CTA rail commuters are already facing a trickier trip into the Loop thanks to construction near the Wells Street Bridge. The agency has advised riders to plan for a longer trip.

According to AccuWeather, the city's previous biggest snowstorm was the 5.4 inches of snow that fell Feb. 26-27.
