James Franco Explains Why He Went Back To College

James Franco dropped by "The Colbert Report" to talk up his new movie "Oz: The Great and Powerful." While there, he and Stephen Colbert got on the topic of all those university courses Franco started taking a while back. Franco compared the experience to "The Wizard of Oz."

"I did feel like the Scarecrow in the original movie," Franco said. "I just want a brain.” He explained that he made the decision to drop out of school initially to pursue acting. But when acting was all he was doing, he found himself wanting more.

“I went back to school, and like the Scarewcrow once I got the diploma I realized, Oh, I guess I had it all along," Franco said.

Franco also agreed that he was a bit like his character in "Oz." Like the great and powerful Oz, when asked if he was a fraud, he replied, "I am a fraud. This is an act. It’s an act."

While it was a subdued and fairly normal interview, that doesn't mean Franco is done getting press with very bizarre headlines. March 4 saw the following headline on Hollywood.com: "James Franco Is Obsessed With A Weird Puppet, Gay Sex, And Some Creepy Twins."

As for why he took a break from being that James Franco to star in "Oz: The Great and Powerful," Franco said he loved how the character was comedic in a fantastical way.

Return to the land of Oz with James Franco in the prequel film "Oz: The Great and Powerful," in theaters Friday, March 8. "The Colbert Report" airs weeknights at 11:30 p.m. EST on Comedy Central.
