LA Mayor Runoff 2013: Eric Garcetti, Wendy Greuel Will Face Off Again In May (LIVE UPDATES)

Was There Ever Any Doubt?

The LA 2013 mayoral primary Tuesday came down to a runoff between Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel.

The polls closed at 8 p.m. Just after midnight, with 42 percent counted in the city's unofficial results, Garcetti received 34 percent of the vote and Greuel 29 percent. Because neither candidate won more than 50 percent, Garcetti and Greuel will face off again in the city's general election on May 21.

By 11:37 p.m. Tuesday, the Los Angeles Times called the election as a runoff between the two candidates. Both candidates acknowledged the upcoming runoff elections via tweets:

At his election party, Garcetti promised his supporters that as mayor, he would work to bring back "the creativity and the genius that is Los Angeles," reports the Associated Press.

As of 12:42 p.m., with 62 percent of the votes counted, Kevin James, the only Republican mayoral candidate, received 15 percent percent of the votes. Councilwoman Jan Perry received 17 percent and Emanuel Pleitez received four percent.

The city reported a voter turnout rate of only 16 percent. Click here to see results for other local races.
