Google Asks That You 'Don't Panic'

Happy birthday to a hoopy frood: Google celebrates British humorist and author of "The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy" Douglas Adams' 61st birthday with an animated and interactive Google Doodle.

Author of five books in the "Hitchhiker's Guide" series between 1979 to 1992, Adams turned his successful British radio program in the 1970s into a global literary obsession. His sci-fi novels follow the space travelings of Arthur Dent, one of the only Earthlings to survive the destruction of the planet at the beginning of the series.

Ever nerdy, Google's artists pepper references to the series into Google's logo du jour. The door at the left reveals Marvin, the Paranoid Android. At the right, there's a towel, which any good hitchhiker knows is "the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have." ("Towel Day," May 25, is an annual celebration of Adams' work.) And of course, toward the center is a titular electronic guidebook for wandering the universe, telling hitchhikers right on its the cover not to panic during their journeys.

In a way, Google is just giving the people what they've demanded with the Doodle. There has been a petition to get Google to celebrate "Towel Day" in years past.
