Once its own independent city, Brooklyn became a borough of New York City in 1898. The thriving area, home to about 2.6 million people, is also home to some eclectic history.

It was here that the British forces defeated the Patriots in August 1776 during the Battle of Brooklyn. One of America's first rural cemeteries, Green-Wood, was established here. And, it was in Brooklyn that Ebbets Field reigned supreme -- albeit for a short time -- before the beloved Dodgers moved to Los Angeles.

Herewith, 10 places that are worth a stop on any Brooklyn tour.
