Ronna Romney McDaniel, Mitt's Niece, Considering Michigan Senate Run: Report

With former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's older brother, Scott Romney, having declined to run for Michigan Senate, the speculation has quickly shifted to the elder Romney's daughter.

The Detroit News reported Wednesday that Ronna Romney McDaniel, Mitt Romney's niece, said she's "looking at" at running as a Republican in the race for outgoing Democratic Sen. Carl Levin's seat.

"It's something I'm going to consider [after] what I saw around the state with how frustrated people were with what's happening in D.C.," Romney McDaniel told The Detroit News. "Maybe this is a time where we can bring a new voice and get a Republican senator from our state."

Romney McDaniel has grown up in the world of politics. Her mother, also named Ronna, ran for state Senate twice in the 1990s, losing both times. Last year, Romney McDaniel served as political director for her uncle's campaign in Michigan. She spoke with Northville Patch at the time:

I literally for two weeks lived in the campaign headquarters day and night, and so did my kids and so did my husband. We knew that we could make a difference ... I'm actually the political director for Mitt's campaign in Michigan which meant that I helped run the volunteer phone bank. I helped get that up and running. I got the volunteers in, kept them motivated and made sure they knew they were part of something important and that they were so appreciated for what they did. We had the most amazing volunteers.

Other Republicans rumored to be vying for Levin’s seat include Reps. Dave Camp, Mike Rogers and Justin Amash. On the Democratic side, Rep. Gary Peters is also reportedly considering a bid.
