WASHINGTON -- Tom Perez is President Obama's next nominee to head the Labor Department, the White House said Sunday night. Obama will announce the nomination on Monday.

Perez is currently an assistant attorney general at the Justice Department, where he has headed the Civil Rights Division since 2009. He previously served as secretary of Maryland's Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR).

"Tom is a dedicated public servant who has spent his career fighting to keep the American dream within reach for hardworking middle class families and those striving to get into the middle class," a White House official said in a statement sent out Sunday.

Under Perez, the Civil Rights Division opposed voter ID laws in Texas and South Carolina and settled the three largest fair lending cases in history. The Huffington Post interviewed Perez about his time as head of the Civil Rights Division earlier this year.
