Wisconsin Travel And 'Airplane!' Directors Make World's Greatest Tourism Ad

The 'Airplane!' Directors' Amazing New Tourism Ad

What happens when you hire the directors of the classic comedy "Airplane!" to direct an advertisement promoting Wisconsin? Fish slapping, accidental tubing and a painful encounter with a dock. And, that's just the beginning.

Looking to make its advertisements a bit more memorable -- and probably more viral -- Wisconsin Travel turned to David Zucker and Robert Hays, the director and star of the greatest movie about travel ever made. For fanboys that means that, yes, Ted Stryker is in the ad.

Sadly, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar isn't. Next time.

By showing the myriad ways in which a trip to a lake can go horribly wrong, the ad takes a somewhat backwards approach to promotion. That said, it does send a strong message that Wisconsin isn't taking itself too seriously. Compare the ad to the ponderous spots put out by places like Colorado, and Wisconsin looks like the fun guy at the party -- at least if you consider the guy making Shirley/surely jokes at a party the fun guy.
