Rossana Lucas, Florida School Bus Driver, Fighting Suspension After Taking Call From Marine Son (VIDEO)

Call From Iraq Leads To Bus Driver's Suspension

Rossana Lucas hadn’t heard from her deployed Marine son in seven months, so when the Florida school bus driver saw him calling from Iraq, she answered her cell phone even though she was behind the wheel, reports WSVN.

Her bosses saw surveillance video showing her prohibited cell phone use, and now Lucas is fighting a five-day suspension without pay. Watch the video above.

Lucas, who had pulled her bus over in Davie and did not have any students on board, told the Miami Herald "Like a mother, in my heart, I had no choice” in answering the call.

Their exchange lasted under two minutes, Lucas says, just enough time to hear her son say “‘Mom, I’m fine and I love you," according to CBS Miami.

The mother had shown a picture of her son searching for land mines to the news station, underscoring her concerns for his safety in Iraq.

WSVN reports that Lucas said if she had missed the call, it would likely be another three or four months until she could have talked with him again.

Monday the Broward County School Board postponed their decision.

“She has a son that is providing his service to our country,” Superintendent of Schools Robert Runcie told NBC 6. “We should provide some kind of compassion to her as they're making sacrifices. I think that's the least we can do.”
