There's one more reason for Midwesterners suffering from wanderlust to look forward to summer. Hop a plane from a Detroit suburb to the Windy City in an hour or less, with free cocktails along the way? That's our kind of travel.
Lakeshore Express Aviation announced last week they will run flights from Oakland County International Airport in Waterford Township, Mich. to Chicago Midway beginning June 6. The flights will initially run Thursday through Sunday.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the airline is moving its headquarters from Chicago to the Oakland County airport. The metro Detroit location is also new -- they currently offer a route between Chicago and the Pellston Regional Airport in northern Michigan, which they will continue. The airline started in 2011 and employs 20 people.
The airline will operate out of private terminals at the airports, which they say cuts down wait time and hassle for travelers.
"Our check-in times are measured in seconds and due to low volumes on our flights, security screening is equally as quick," said Lakeshore Express CEO Greg Stallkamp in a statement. "Flying on Lakeshore Express is like having your own personal jet."
Heading to Lollapalooza? No driving (or parking) necessary. Want to watch the White Sox get crushed by the Tigers on their own turf? You can be wings up across Lake Michigan and back in a jiffy. According to the Free Press, Stallkamp's company found that founding the route from Chicago to northern Michigan "caused people to travel to Michigan two times more often than they did before our service existed."
The airline will run 30-seat planes between the airports, according to Crain's Detroit Business. One of the best parts? No baggage fees.
