James Franco On Anne Hathaway Haters And How He And The Actress 'Made Up'

Posted: Updated:

James Franco is making the press rounds for "Spring Breakers," but one radio host had another topic of conversation on his mind: Anne Hathaway, and the public's well-documented love-hate relationship with the "Les Miserables" actress.

In an interview with Howard Stern (via US Weekly), Franco admitted that Hathaway "does not want me talking about this," but after telling Stern that the host would have to lead the discussion, he played along anyway.

Stern set up the situation thusly: "Everyone sort of hates Anne Hathaway, and I've explained that I do too and I don't know even know why sometimes," Stern explained. "She's just so affected [and] actress-y that even when she wins an award she's out of breath, and then she has the standard joke that sounds like it's [been] written [for her]. And it all seems so scripted and acted."

Franco didn't exactly balk. "I'm not an expert on -- I guess they're called 'Hatha-haters'-- but I think that's what maybe triggers it," he said before admitting that the two "haven't talked in awhile."

Still, it seems things are (or were, perhaps, until today) right in the Franco-Hathaway universe. "Anne and I made up, by the way," Franco said. "Let's just get that on the record."

It wasn't always peachy between the two young stars. When the pair hosted the Oscars in 2011, Franco appeared wholly uninterested in the endeavor, a stark contrast to Hathaway's bubbly personality. Their performance was savaged by critics amid rumors the duo grew to hate each other during rehearsals (at the time, both parties' reps denied any animosity). That Academy Awards ceremony continues to be a punchline, most recently and hilariously at the Golden Globes, when host Tina Fey complimented Hathaway's "Les Miserables" performance by quipping, "I have not seen someone so totally alone and abandoned like that since you were alone with James Franco at the Oscars."

Hathaway has admitted her performance came across as over the top to TV viewers and advised Seth MacFarlane, who hosted the 2013 Academy Awards, to study rehearsal tapes and adjust his take accordingly.

"Spring Breakers" caught fire at the box office over the past two weeks, outperforming "The Master" and doing well for an indie release. In addition to playing the role of Alien, a Florida gangster, in the Harmony Korine film, the erstwhile HuffPost blogger, professor, serial student, performance artist and Playboy columnist stars in the title role of "Oz: The Great and Powerful."
