Nothing is sexier than red lipstick (in our opinion). It can anchor your makeup look and transform an ordinary outfit into a stunning ensemble. Just take a gander at Scarlett Johansson's crimson lips.
Lip color, no matter what shade you choose, can be any girl's instant pick-me-up. Yet, when applied incorrectly, it's a major downfall. Regular exfoliation and lip liner helps to prevent dry, cracked lips and lipstick feathering, but lip primer does wonders to ensure smooth application and long-lasting color.
In an effort to find the best lip primers (aka the ones that actually make your lipstick stay on your lips), the editors at HuffPost Style put the best brands to the test.

Read our lips:
"The application felt very cool (as in, menthol-y), which was interesting but not awful. I do think it made my lipstick last a lot longer. Sometimes I try the lip liner trick (covering your lips in liner before applying the lipstick), but I'd say the primer made my color last twice as long. I wore it out on Saturday night and had more drinks than I care to admit, and my lipstick lasted through all of 'em!" - Lauren Leibowitz, associate editor, HuffPost Style Rating: 4 out of 5 -- I don't believe anything deserves a perfect score, like ever. "The primer was a light, opaque formula that glided onto my usually dry lips pretty smooth thanks to the sponge brush applicator, and it dried down to a matte finish. When applying, I used a satin lip pencil from NARS, and the lip primer helped to create a seamless finish. After I put on my lip color there were no signs of feathering or bleeding -- shocker! And it withstood an entire weekend of good eating." - Dana Oliver, beauty editor, HuffPost Style Rating: I'd rate it a 4 out of 5, minus 1 point as the color faded just a smidgen in the middle of my lips while I was eating. I'd definitely recommend this product to my lipstick-wearing girlfriends because you won't need to carry your tube of lipstick around when heading out for the day or night, thus creating more space for your keys, cellphone and cash. "The primer was very light and glossy. It made my lipstick go on more smoothly but it made my matte lipstick glossy -- something I try to avoid. Because there is no precision to the application of the primer, I noticed that my lipstick bled. I didn't get a crisp line, rather it was soft and feathered. The primer didn't make my lipstick last longer. That said, I tend to wear dark lipsticks and I feel like this product might be more useful for lighter shades that don't need crisp edges like a bold red does." - Raydene Salinas, photographer, HuffPost Style & Home Rating: 2 out of 5. I feel like my Chapstick regimen does the same thing as this primer, without the uber-glossy finish and the soft edges, so I probably wouldn't recommend this product ... unless you like a shiny lip. "The primer was very light, even lighter than a Chapstick. (Plus, it smelled nice.) It definitely made my lipstick go on more smoothly -- instead of immediately moving to the edges of my lips, the color went on evenly over the area and there was no bleeding! That said, I don't think it made my lipstick last longer, but it definitely looked nicer and more substantial while it lasted." - Rebecca Adams, associate news editor, HuffPost Style Rating: 4 out of 5. I'd recommend it to a friend who wears a lot of reds and burgundies because those don't tend to go on evenly and this fixed that problem completely. Buy here
"The primer was light and matte when I applied it on my lips. It definitely helped my red lipstick go on more smoothly and it covered up my somewhat chapped lips. After a day of lots of eating, my color was almost perfectly intact. My only issue with this primer was that it didn't stop the color from bleeding." - Michelle Persad, fashion and beauty assistant, HuffPost Style Rating: 4 out of 5. I would definitely recommend this to a friend, but would tell them to also use a lip liner to prevent their color from wandering. Buy here
"The primer was slightly thicker than expected -- it was creamier and didn't dry as much as I thought it would. It felt almost like a lip balm. It did help my lipstick go on smoothly, although I did feel like it made my lip color less prominent. The VS PRO did keep my lipstick in place -- I didn't feel as self-conscious about the color moving as I normally am." - Ellie Krupnick, senior news editor, HuffPost Style Rating: 3 out of 5. I liked the smooth texture, but it was a tad creamy. I would recommend this primer to a friend, but I would probably also tell them to test a few more. Buy here
These new long wear lipsticks are a great solution for lip color that won't fade away.
