Nicki Minaj Returning For 'American Idol' Season 13?

Nicki Minaj Teases 'Idol' Future

"Would I come back next season? I think people would rather be surprised," Minaj said during a conference call with press. "I like to save the mystery and the drama. I'd never give that away."

Minaj joined the "American Idol" judging panel for Season 12 alongside Keith Urban and Mariah Carey. The new judges joined veteran Randy Jackson to form the new panel, which certainly made headlines. A feud between Minaj and Carey erupted and played out in the press for weeks. When the series kicked off, Minaj was heralded for her frank criticism of contestants.

"I am absolutely just being me," Minaj said of her judging style. "I didn’t know what to expect. I had a lot of anxiety. I felt like, 'I know everybody is just going to hate me. Oh well.' There were moments in the audition process that I would say to the producers, 'I can’t do this anymore, because if everyone is going to give good critique, and I’m going to be the only being honest, then America is going to hate me. I’m going to be seen as mean.'"

Minaj said producers had her back and promised the audience would appreciate her honesty. "I had Mike Darnell [Fox's president of alternative programming], and Trish [Kinane, president of entertainment programming at FremantleMedia], and Nigel [Lythgoe, executive producer] telling me to take their word. And that’s what I did. I took their word and I came in every day and I was myself," she said.

"Idol" has been pushing for a woman to win Season 12 and Minaj has her picks. “Kree, Angie and Candice,” she said on the call. “I think that, outside of their voices, they've won people over already, which I think is evident in just what I see on Twitter with my fans. Those three seem to have really made an impact."

"American Idol" airs Wednesdays and Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
