'Pain And Gain' Red Band Trailer: Michael Bay Is A Doer (VIDEO)

"If you're willing to do the work, you can do anything. That's what makes the U.S.A. great," notes Mark Wahlberg's character in "Pain and Gain."

Michael Bay did the work for the new film; four years ago, he told MTV that "Pain and Gain" was a "a 'Pulp Fiction'-type of movie." Cut to this week, and that Bay's prediction looks pretty darn accurate, at least judging by the new "Pain and Gain" red band trailer and this tweet by THR reporter Borys Kit.

Based on a series of Miami New Times articles, "Pain and Gain" focuses on three lunkheads (Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie) who kidnap a rich businessman (Tony Shaloub) and extort him out of thousands of dollars. Things go awry as they often do in stories like this, putting the film's "heroes" in harm's way. (Johnson's character loses his toe.)

"People I've shown it to, literally the first thing they say is, 'That is really original,'" Bay told HuffPost Entertainment last year. "A bunch of people have said that right off of the bat. So, whatever that means. Because when you direct it, you're kind of inside of it and it's hard to see it. It's quirky, it's funny, it's twisted -- but you get a lot of character in it. To me, there's an underlying current of, 'No one is happy with what they've got.' That's why I've always liked it and it has always appealed to me."

What Bay has got is a career of blockbusters like "Armageddon" and "Transformers"; if "Pain and Gain" lives up to those "Pulp Fiction" comparisons, however, perhaps he'll make his own American dream come true.
