Matthew Broderick has signed on to play the lead in CBS' multicamera comedy pilot from Tad Quill, according to Deadline.

A veteran film and theater actor who rarely does TV, Broderick will play Jack, "a recently widowed father who raises his 12-year old son while jumping back into the dating pool," in the pilot from CBS Television Studios. He reportedly took the role after a meeting with Quill and a "lengthy courtship" from the producers.

Broderick's most notable movies include "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "Glory" and "The Lion King." He has recently made guest appearances on "Modern Family" and "30 Rock," but if the pilot makes it to series, it will be Broderick's first lead TV role. Quill previously produced "Scrubs" and "Spin City."

Deadline also notes that the Quill project was initially conceived and ordered to pilot three years ago, but was put on hold because the network and producers struggled to cast Broderick's role.

Do you think Broderick sounds like a good fit for a CBS comedy?
