Matthew Perry & M. Night Shyamalan: Actor's Drunken Confusion With The Horror Director

Matthew Perry's Drunken Night

It's rare for celebrities to get starstruck, but for Matthew Perry, a chance meeting with a famed director made his night. Until it didn't.

Perry was at a bar when he ran into a man who he thought was "Sixth Sense" director M. Night Shyamalan, spending hours with the man chatting and drinking.

“A friend of mine comes up and says, ‘How you doin’?’ I said, ‘How’m I doin’? I’ve been hangin’ out with M. Night Shyamalan for the last three hours. This is the greatest night of my life," Perry told Jay Leno on Monday's episode of "The Tonight Show." "He’s gonna do a new movie, it’s gonna be a trick ending, it’s gonna be me.’"

"My friend says, ‘That’s not M. Night Shyamalan,’” Perry explained.

Unfortunately for Perry, the man he had been hanging out with was actually the maître d' of Mr. Chow's restaurant -- a mistake he attributed to a night of drinking.

The incident apparently happened after Shyamalan's success with "The Sixth Sense" in 1999. During that same time period, Perry battled substance abuse issues of his own, admitting to an addiction to painkillers in 1997 and checking into rehab in 2001.

For the rest of Perry's interview with Leno, head over to The Tonight Show.
