Newt Gingrich: Obama Is 'The Most Successful Salesman' For Guns

While many have praised President Barack Obama's gun control reform mission, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R) has dubbed Obama "the most successful gun salesman" in recent times.

In an interview with Newsmax published on Monday, Gingrich criticized Obama's approach to gun control legislation, going as far to say that his rhetoric has increased the popularity of guns.

"No one has done more for gun ownership than Barack Obama," Gingrich said. "If you look at the number of people who have bought guns since he became president, he has been the most successful salesman for people having the right to bear arms in modern history."

Gingrich added he does not believe any major gun legislation will pass. He said he believes that while the Senate Democrats may be successful with minor legislation that "they can claim as a public relations victory," overall efforts to reform gun laws will fail.

In February, the Huffington Post reported that the number of guns purchased during Obama's presidency is four times higher than the number of babies born during the same time. The Associated Press reported in October that the gun industry was thriving under Obama's first term, with little active gun legislation at the time. After December's tragic elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn., gun sales surged across the country.

GOP senators are already gearing up to block Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's (D-Nev.) gun bill when it makes its way to the Senate floor. Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rand Paul (R-Ky.), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Mike Lee (R-Utah) have pledged to filibuster the motion to proceed to debate the legislation.
