Glittering lights and abandoned towers. Soaring skyscrapers and vacant meadows. Innovation and abandonment. Detroit is a city of extremes. What better place, then, to host the world's foremost showcase of extreme sports, the X Games?

On Tuesday, Kevin Krease and Garret Koehler submitted Detroit's official bid to host the annual Summer X Games beginning in 2014 for a three-year contract. The two young men both quit their jobs to build the ambitious plan, which they say could attract more than 200,000 visitors every summer to the Motor City. Detroit is one of almost 20 North American cities who were named as qualifying cities to continue in the bid process.

"The thing you notice right away with the Detroit group is the enthusiasm and passion they have for this event. For us, that's great," said Deane Swanson, senior director of content strategy for the Global X Games, who paid a visit to the city. "I was so impressed with the amount of enthusiasm, from the grassroots level all the way up to the corporate level."
