3.9Of Marijuana Found During Traffic Stop

A routine traffic stop this week quickly turned into a major drug bust for Texas Highway Patrol troopers, who seized 3.9 tons of marijuana from a tanker rig.

The weed -- valued at more than $3.4 million -- was concealed inside a tanker truck, NBC News reports. Officers pulled the driver over northeast of Corpus Christi for a commercial vehicle inspection Tuesday and discovered the stash.

The driver, 45-year-old Paul Anthony Simmons, was arrested on a marijuana possession charge and a $1 million bail was posted, according to The Independent.

"It's a big, significant seizure," Texas Department of Public Saftey Sgt. Johnny Hernandez told NBC News. He said the seizure is the largest in recent memory.

Few details on what led to the find were immediately available. Police said they expect more arrests, KRIS-TV reports.

An investigation is ongoing.
