Conan O'Brien Congratulates Jimmy Fallon On 'Tonight Show' Announcement (VIDEO)

WATCH: Conan's Classy Congratulations To Fallon

Last night, the news that Jimmy Fallon will take over "The Tonight Show" was the hot topic in late night monologues. But most notable was congratulations offered by the man for whom the news held special significance: Conan O'Brien.

"It was announced today just a couple hours ago that Jimmy Fallon is going to take over 'The Tonight Show' next year, and I want to congratulate Jimmy," said O'Brien, who is hosting a week of shows in Atlanta, before bringing out his first guest.

"That is a really fun gig," he continued, to some audience laugher. "Jimmy is the perfect guy to do it. He's going to do a fantastic job. So congratulations, Jimmy."

Of course, O'Brien hosted "The Tonight Show" from June 2010 until January 2011, when NBC concluded that his "Tonight Show" did not see the ratings success they had hoped and reinstalled Jay Leno as the "Tonight Show" host. O'Brien then went on a live tour and starred in a documentary in which he was open about his disappointment with NBC's handling of the situation.

Fallon also took over "Late Night" from O'Brien in 2009, and part of O'Brien's decision to not remain at NBC was that he did not want to disrupt the success of Fallon's show by tampering with the "Tonight Show" time slot.
