'Happy Endings': Andy Richter Is Penny's Estranged Father

Fans got another one-two punch of "Happy Endings" on Friday night, and this time it came with a couple of guest appearances. While RuPaul had a brief bit as a stylist, Andy Richter established a potential recurring role as Penny's estranged gay father. He showed up as preparations for her wedding were kicking into high gear.

Penny hadn't considered who would walk her down the aisle, so Alex convinced her to reach out to her father. The main shtick of the character is that he jokes when he gets nervous; a character trait he shares with his daughter.

While Penny ultimately decided she wasn't ready to have her dad walk her down the aisle, she did want him to come to her wedding. So that was basically an invitation to Richter to return. Maybe he can share some screen-time with Penny's mother, played by Megan Mullally, at the wedding.

The AV Club wasn't as impressed with the characterization of Penny's dad as they were with her mom, writing, "Megan Mullally is an outsized presence as Penny’s mom, but Richter really just shrugged and said he was sorry and was very nice ... Richter’s funny! Why give him so little to do?"

Ratings haven't exactly been stellar on Friday nights, but Hollywood.com is pleading with fans to stay in and watch the show. But even if ABC pulls the plug, there's still hope. Rumor has it that USA is interested in picking it up, much like TBS did to save "Cougar Town."

For now, catch two new episodes of "Happy Endings" every Friday at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.
