Margaret Thatcher Media Coverage: Outlets Around The World Remember Prime Minister

The death of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher prompted an outpouring of coverage from media outlets around the world.

Thatcher was undoubtedly the most powerful, polarizing and consequential British prime minister in the second half of the twentieth century. She was also, along with Winston Churchill and Tony Blair, the leader who most captured the imagination of the American public. Therefore, it was not surprising that all American broadcast and cable news networks kicked off their 8 am hours with obituaries and remembrances. (The networks did not all linger long; Fox News moved swiftly on to pregnancies in the country music world.) Newspapers everywhere splashed the news on their websites.

In Britain, newspapers and television networks all immediately switched to rolling coverage of Thatcher's death. The Guardian's obituary was indicative of the flavor of much of the coverage:

Margaret Thatcher, who has died aged 87, was, simply, a political phenomenon. She was the first woman elected to lead a major western power; the longest serving British prime minister for 150 years; the most dominant, divisive force in British politics in the second half of the 20th century.
