Thinking of adding some color to your home decor? Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of Apartment Therapy shared his favorite tips on using color in this episode of Need To Know. This is what he suggests:

  • Follow the 80/20 Rule -- Use 20% color and 80% neutral in a room. 20% of color will go a long way and make the rest of the room feel colorful. It will also pull the color out of the neutrals.
  • Know Your Color Families -- If you're new to working with color, know that there are two general families that you can work with -- the warm family (red, yellow, orange) and the cool family (blue, green, purple). The two families can mix, but if you're new to using color, stick with only warms or only cools.
  • Warm Colors Stimulate and Cool Colors Calm -- Use warm colors in social rooms (living room, dining room, kitchen) and use cool colors in rooms that you want to be more peaceful (bedroom, office). By varying the color throughout your home from warm to cool, you'll emphasize the activity within your home.
