James Franco To Accept Award At Miami Gay And Lesbian Film Festival

Miami Franco-philes... Get Ready

Fresh off of spoofing Spring Break in Florida in Harmony Korine's "Spring Breakers," James Franco returns to the Sunshine State to accept an award at this year's Miami Gay and Lesbian Festival.

The local flick fest, which runs April 26 to May 5, will present the actor-author-director with the HBO Latin America Ally Award for his "unwavering support of the LGBT community," according to a release.

“We are thrilled to host an actor of James Franco’s caliber at the Miami Gay and Lesbian Film Festival,” Franc Castro, executive director of the MGLFF, said in a press release. “His multi-faceted talents coupled with his contributions to LGBT film both in front of the camera and behind the scenes have helped shine the spotlight on LGBT cinema and a filmmaker’s right to free expression.”

Franco, who regularly blogs everything from book recommendations to movie reviews for the Huffington Post, famously played the boyfriend of gay rights activist Harvey Milk in the 2008 biopic "Milk," which won him an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male role.

His most recent film is "Interior. Leather Bar," a film inspired by the 1980 thriller, "Cruising" that had 40 minutes of explicit gay sexual footage cut in order to avoid an X rating.

"Part of what I’m interested in is how these people who were living anti-normative lifestyles contended with opposition," Franco once said about his choice to play gay roles. "Or, you know what, maybe I’m just gay.”

"Interior. Leather Bar" will screen at MGLFF on April 28 at 8:30 p.m. at the Colony Theatre in Miami Beach. See the trailer below.

Franco will accept his award the night before on April 27 at the Olympia Theater at Gusman Center in downtown Miami, right before a screening of "Out In The Dark."
