Sydney 'Rainbow Road' Removal Sparks Row In Australia

WATCH: End Of The Rainbow For Aussie Gay Community?

In Sydney, it's the end of the rainbow -- pedestrian crossing, that is.

The BBC reports that many members of the Aussie city's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community were angered by the removal of an Oxford Street crossing painted in rainbow stripes for a Mardi Gras parade.

Road workers replaced the colorful strip, which had become a local tourist attraction before being deemed a safety hazard, with grey pavement on April 11.

Among those dismayed by the removal was Nancy Goymerac, who told the Herald Sun, "It’s a shame to see a bright rainbow covered by a dirty old tarmac, It takes them forever to fix up pot holes but this that hurts nobody is taken away straight away.”

Local state MP Alex Greenwich felt similarly, telling The Telegraph that the government should apologize to the LGBT community for removing the strip without notice.

"People loved this crossing and they wanted a chance to say goodbye," he is quoted as saying.
