Darren Criss' 'Call Me Maybe' Cover At GLAAD Awards Includes Gay Rights Lyrics (VIDEO)

WATCH: Darren Criss' Cover Of 'Call Me Maybe' Has An Awesome Gay Twist

Darren Criss, star of "Glee," offered the audience at the GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles a very gay version of Carly Rae Jepsen's pop hit "Call Me Maybe."

The 26-year-old actor graced the stage on April 20 to croon about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) rights and call for an end to the Defense of Marriage Act and California's Proposition 8.

"Guys, I was going to play a very, you know, poignant jazz standard," Criss playfully explained to the crowd, "but then I got a text from my friend Carly Rae Jepsen and she said you have to sing the original lyrics to my song. I was like, 'I don't think that's very appropriate for this event.' And she said, 'No, no, no. The original lyrics are a lot better than what's on the radio now. Just play it.' So, I'm just following her rules here."

Drew Barrymore hosted the event, one of three GLAAD awards shows to take place this year, and Hollywood favorites like Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron were also in attendance. Singer Kelly Rowland also performed during the night.
