It often doesn't take long for real-life controversies and tragedies to make their way to the big screen (last year's "Zero Dark Thirty" and "The Impossible," just to name some recent examples) -- but they don't usually come in as strange of a package as this.
"Wild Things," the provocative 1998 thriller starring Neve Campbell, Denise Richards, Matt Dillon, Kevin Bacon and Bill Murray, could receive a sequel, but with a major twist: It'll be inspired largely by the Amanda Knox murder trial.
To be specific, it's not a sequel per se, according to director John McNaughton, who told Hollywood.com that, if made, the new movie will center on the original characters' children.
"Do you know the Amanda Knox case? It's something like that," McNaughton reportedly said. "Something that's like the child of Suzie Toller [Campbell's character], she claimed that Matt Dillon's [character] had raped her a long time ago and maybe there is a child and maybe Bill Murray's character had a child and they're exchange students and things get out of hand. We're calling it 'Wild Child Things.'"
It sort of sounds like a joke, right? Well, it isn't -- at least according to McNaughton -- although there is no studio or cast attached to the film yet.
"Just about three weeks ago, [screenwriter] Steven Peters' manager, sent me an email saying he had this idea, and he sent me a one-page outline and I think it's pretty fun. We're trying to see if there's any interest," the director said. That may prove difficult, especially considering that "Wild Things 2" and "Wild Things: Diamonds in the Rough," neither of which contained any of the original cast, both went straight to DVD.
The original "Wild Things" received mildy positive reviews but nabbed only about $30 million at the box office and became more famous for its three-way sex scene and girl-on-girl action, both involving Campbell and Richards, as well as a full-frontal shot of Bacon.
