'The Vampire Diaries' Backdoor Pilot 'The Originals': Klaus Wants To Be King Of New Orleans (VIDEO)

'The Vampire Diaries' Backdoor Pilot Takes Klaus To New Orleans

The villainous vampire-werewolf hybrid Klaus has been a fascinating character since his first appearance on "The Vampire Diaries." But is he strong enough to lead a new show? The CW put that to the test this week with an episode entitled "The Originals." The potential backdoor pilot showed Klaus relocating to New Orleans, where he mixed it up with faces new and familiar.

His brother Elijah showed up to see what the witches wanted with him. That answer came with a surprise of its own. Hayley, the werewolf Klaus had bedded in a prior episode of "TVD," was in New Orleans, too. And she was with child.

"Vampires cannot procreate!" Klaus insisted, but the child was his.

"Magic made you a vampire, but you were born a werewolf," said local witch Sophie. "You’re an original hybrid."

Klaus clashed with the local power structure, led by his former protege, Marcel. New Orleans is a city rules by the vampires, with the witches held in check by fear and the werewolves run out of town. But Sophie hopes to change all that. Klaus, meanwhile, wants to be king. He wants everything Marcel has built over the last 100 years in what was once Klaus' town.

Hollywood Life was fully on board with this potential spin-off. "If The CW doesn’t pick up this spin-off, it would be a crime against television," they wrote. TV.com was impressed with "The Originals" as well, saying, "As an individual episode, ‘The Originals’ managed to introduce a new world and a handful of new characters, while recontextualizing our relationship with a villain-turned-lead. That's not easy to pull off."

Fans can expect a decision next month on whether or not The CW will move forward with "The Originals" as a series. Meanwhile, "The Vampire Diaries" continues on Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
