La Salle High School Shooting: Honors Student Used Semiautomatic Handgun On Himself, Cops Say

School 'Shooter' Used Semiautomatic Handgun In Suicide Attempt

Police say that an Ohio student who attempted suicide in front of 22 other students on Monday used a semiautomatic handgun.

The unidentified teen, an honors student at La Salle High School in Cincinnati, was struggling for his life in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Monday afternoon, CBS News reports.

The school was locked down in the morning after the student turned the gun on himself in front of his honors class. The school was reopened after the teen was taken to the hospital and police determined there was no longer a threat. Police are investigating how the student obtained the gun and how he got it into the school, according to WCPO.

Several other students at the all-male Catholic school dialed 911 after the incident, the New York Daily News reports.

Officials say he's highly involved in the school and has logged about 80 hours of community service.

Classes on Tuesday began with a prayer service, WCPO reports.
