Mississippi Student Who Sent Racist Tweet May Be Placed In Alternative Learning Program

A Mississippi high school student who tweeted a racist message during school hours may be placed in an alternative learning program as punishment, a school official told CBS affiliate WJTV.

Administrators at Brandon High School in Brandon, Miss., a small town of about 21,000, did not respond to requests for comment from The Huffington Post, but the school's assistant principal told WJTV the unidentified female student could face "an out-of-school suspension" or "placement into Learning Center, which is our alternative learning program."

The student caused a stir Thursday when she took to Twitter during school hours and posted that she hated African Americans. She used both profanity and a racial slur to express herself.

Learning Center, the Rankin County School District's alternative learning program, features "unique instructional strategies" for students with behavioral and academic problems, according to the school district's website.

This isn't the first time a Brandon High School student has forced the community to confront white-on-black racism.

In 2012, 19-year-old Deryl Dedmon, who had attended the school, was given two life sentences for killing 47-year-old auto worker James Craig Anderson with his pickup truck, according to the Associated Press. (Anderson's family asked prosecutors not to pursue a death sentence, the report noted.)

Dedmon, who is white, said he had been partying with friends when he suggested they find a black man to harass. According to AP, he later used a racial slur to brag about killing Anderson, police said.

According to the 2010 census, Brandon's population is about 81 percent white and 17 percent black.
