Ruben Pavon, Man Accused Of Stealing From 'Finders Keepers,' Blames Store Name (VIDEO)

A New Hampshire man is really taking "finders keepers" to heart.

Accused of stealing products from a Derry store's front porch, Ruben Pavon is blaming the shop's name, Finders Keepers, for the thefts, WMUR-TV reports.

"The sign did say 'Finders Keepers.' So I took that DVD player, took it home," Pavon told the local TV station. "A couple of weeks later, the stuff is still there on the porch, so I'm thinking to myself, 'Finders Keepers. They probably just put stuff out there for people to take.'"

However, the thrift shop-like store, which receives many of its products through donations and contributes some of its revenue to military and children's charities, is not as convinced that the alleged theft was simply a misinterpretation of its sign.

In a post on the store's Facebook page Wednesday, Finders Keepers wrote:

We really thought this whole theft thing was over - now this man WHO WAS CAUGHT ON VIDEO is saying it is all a misunderstanding - he thought everything at our STORE was free... is that really the best defense he could come up with?

Authorities identified Pavon from a store surveillance video, which showed a man and a young boy carrying a packaged grill from the porch, after hours, on April 26. Derry police issued an arrest warrant Monday, according to The Eagle Tribune.

"It was enough they were stealing items that were intended to help other people," store owner Laura Barker told the Tribune. "But to see a child assisting was horrible. It was just like adding insult to injury."

Pavon reportedly turned in the stolen goods to police earlier this week and holds that he's not a bad person or "bad dad," according to WMUR. Criminal charges against Pavon have not been filed, through the investigation into the incident is ongoing.
