KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City animal shelter is caring for a puppy that authorities say survived nearly a month locked in an impounded car.
According to KCTV, the 12-week-old puppy, who rescuers have name Kia, was discovered in a 1990 Chevrolet Suburban that was towed to a city lot on April 8. Because the vehicle was locked, authorities were not permitted to enter, the news source reports.
The terrier and schnauzer mix apparently survived by eating trash left in the car including remnants from fast food bags and cigars, but didn't have access to water, KCTV reports.
"Without an appreciable amount of water, it’s pretty miraculous for a puppy to survive three weeks in a car," veterinarian Billie Deam told the Kansas City Star.
A lot employee saw Kia on Monday afternoon and called the police, who broke into the vehicle to rescue the pup.
Toni Fugate, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Pet Project and the city shelter, says the puppy was dehydrated and malnourished but is expected to survive. She is currently being fostered and nursed back to health, and the shelter hopes to find Kia a permanent home in a few weeks.
"I am not sure how the dog miraculously survived its encampment," Danny Rotert, a spokesman for the Kansas City municipal government, told KCTV.
