Crist Backs Gay Marriage

Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, who became a Democrat after serving as the state's Republican governor and is considering a challenge to Gov. Rick Scott (R) in 2014, announced on Facebook Wednesday that he supports gay marriage.

"Some great news: On Tuesday, Delaware became the 11th state to allow marriage equality. And just a few days ago, Rhode Island adopted a similar measure, which followed victories last fall in Maine, Maryland and Washington," he wrote. "I most certainly support marriage equality in Florida and look forward to the day it happens here."

The statement marks a full reversal for Crist, who in 2006 signed a petition to add a gay marriage ban to the state's constitution. In December 2012, he said he regretted doing so.

Crist will address Democrats on Saturday at the Kennedy-King Dinner in Tampa. Democratic LGBT activist Michael Rajner had called on him to clarify his position on same-sex marriage before he spoke.
