Thompson teed up on the par-3, 231-yard eighth hole before taking the swing that placed him just six shots behind Castro on the leaderboard. It was the first ace at the hole in 13 years, and only the sixth at No. 8 at Sawgrass, via the Arizona Star Daily.
It was the first ace at The Players Championship since 2008, per golfchannel.com.
“I wanted to hit a low draw with a 3-iron, just land it somewhere on the front of the green and have it chase back to the hole. That was the image I had in my mind, the picture, so to speak," said Thompson to Golf Channel. "The luck part of it is once it hit the green, anything can happen.”
