BENICIA -- In honor of Mother's Day, a Benicia salon is reaching out to three moms who are striving to overcome the effects of homelessness.
The Courtyard Salon on West D Street is partnering with Mission Solano to provide complimentary makeovers to the women, who are staying at Bridge to Life Center in Fairfield.
"The women who were chosen are very honored and excited," said Donna Quintero, the nonprofit homeless shelter's community relations manager. "This makeover will help lift not only their spirits but their confidence as well, and make them feel good about themselves."
Salon stylist Samantha Larot said this will be an annual charity event in partnership with the shelter.
"There is so much we can do within our own community to give back no matter how big or small," said Larot, a Benicia resident. Larot added that the salon plans to coordinate continuous events to raise awareness about the shelter, which houses about 24 women, 16 children and 37 male veterans.
As part of the May 19 event, "Glam Gives Back," stylists will also be giving blow dries and haircuts half off with all earnings and donations going directly to the shelter.
"It's not just about giving a donation, but being able to actually touch somebody's life," Larot said. "We figured Mother's Day would be the best time of year for it."
Quintero said the idea came from the ladies at the salon.
"They approached Mission Solano wanting to bless some of the moms that are staying at the Bridge to Life Center," Quintero said. "We're pleased to be partnering with such a giving company and look forward to doing more in the future."
Each makeover -- complete with coloring, highlights, hair cuts, manicures and pedicures -- will be worth about $300, Larot said. She said the salon will also provide new outfits for the women and hire a limo to escort them to and from the event.
"We want to make them feel beautiful inside and out," Larot said.
Larot's mother, Jane Larot, who co-owns the salon with Holly Gutierrez, credited her daughter for thinking of the idea.
"We're glad she thought of it," Jane Larot said. "This is the first time we're going to do a big charity event."
Established in 1998, the rescue mission's facilities include dorms for homeless veterans, women and families and a day care. The organization also provides hot showers and meals and temporary shelter through different churches.
Glam Gives Back will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Courtyard Salon, 114 West D St. Anyone interested in attending is asked to call Larot at (707) 398-5667 for an appointment.
