Transgender Student: I'm 'Overwhelmed' By Support To Let Me Wear Boys' Graduation Gown

Damian Garcia, a transgender student at St. Pius X High School in New Mexico is about to graduate, but a tradition at the school may keep him from attending the graduation ceremony.

Although the student body supports Garcia's hope of wearing a black gown for boys, school officials are insisting he wear the girls' white gown in adherence with the gender listed on his birth certificate.

Among those to step forward in support of Garcia was "Modern Family" star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, a St. Pius alum. Meanwhile, a local mother has launched an online petition defending the student's case that has thus far drawn over 25,000 signatures from all over the world.

Garcia, who says he is prepared to skip the ceremony, nonetheless adds that he is "overwhelmed, excited, blown away" by all the support.
