Tejal Rao, Nick Pinto Resign From Village Voice

Two More Staffers Resign From Village Voice

Two more Village Voice staffers — food critic Tejal Rao and staff writer Nick Pinto — announced their resignations on Monday.

"I've resigned from my post at the Voice," Rao tweeted. "Thanks to the writers and editors who made working here a dream come true." Moments later, Pinto tweeted, "I just gave notice to the Village Voice that I'll be resigning after my forthcoming feature. Love & thanks to colleagues past and present."

Their resignations came days after brutal cuts, which Gawker called a "bloodbath," caused turmoil at the paper on Friday. The newspaper fired legendary columnist Michael Musto, along with food critic Robert Sietsema and theater critic Michael Feingold. News of Musto's firing left readers especially disheartened, while Rao's decision will leave the Voice without a food critic.

Musto told HuffPost Live on Monday that the mood at the paper is "dour," while Gawker reported that staffers were "devastated" by Friday's cuts.

Will Bourne and Jessica Lustig, the paper's top two editors, also resigned earlier this month after being asked to impose the most recent round of layoffs. They chose to leave the paper, rather than make further cuts.

"When I was brought in here, I was explicitly told that the bloodletting had come to an end," Bourne told the New York Times at the time. "I have enormous respect for the staff here and the work they have been doing, and I am not going to preside over further layoffs."
