No-kill animal shelter PAWS Chicago set off Friday on their rescue mission that will transfer 75 pets from Oklahoma to Chicago in the wake of the devastating tornado that hit Moore on Monday.

The Oklahoma City Animal Care & Control (OACC) has experienced an increase in the number of displaced, injured and homeless pets following the storm and are reportedly over-capacity, struggling to meet the needs of the many pets being brought to them.

PAWS plans to rescue approximately 75 animals from the shelter in order to free up their facilities to meet the needs of tornado-victimized pets -- whose owners have 30 days to come and claim them.

Their crew left Friday afternoon and expected to return with the animals Saturday evening. PAWS Chicago executive director Rochelle Michalek told NBC Chicago the pets will then be available for adoption from their center at 1997 N. Clybourne Ave. on Memorial Day.

More than 350 people volunteered to take part in the pet rescue effort, according to DNAinfo Chicago, and most of the 75 pets have been at the shelter for at least a few weeks and were at risk of being euthanized.

PAWS plans to post photos and more information about the Oklahoma pets on their website on Saturday. Meanwhile, scroll down to view a selection of pets also currently up for adoption from PAWS and other shelters in the Chicago area.
