'SheZow' Is The Hub's First Gender-Bending Cartoon Superhero (VIDEO)

Posted: Updated:

It seems this summer is full of superheroes with a new caped crusader movie opening every weekend whether it be "Iron Man 3," "The Wolverine" or "Man of Steel," but who knew that the season's most groundbreaking superhero would debut on a children's television channel?

Guy is a normal 12-year old boy who loves video games and skateboarding, but when he finds a magic ring, he is transformed into the female superhero SheZow, almost like a gender-bending Green Lantern. SheZow isn't a masculine, sinewy X-Men, but more like Wonder Woman, complete with pink skirt, thigh-high boots and a pink car for saving the world.

Finding stiff competition in the children television market, with competitors like Disney Channel and Nick Jr., The Hub, a channel for children and tweens, launched in 2010, has found success with such series as "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" and "Transformers," but looking to break out of the toy-based box, they are premiering "SheZow" to an audience of children who will hopefully embrace a gender swapping superhero.

Gender switching has been featured in comics before such as the popular Manga and Anime series, "Ranma 1/2," and even Archie characters switched genders last year in the alternative universe story, "Reversedale," where Archie was transformed into Archina, and Betty became Billy.

While gender has been played with on the comic shelf, it's never really been explored in children's television before. Whether "SheZow" gets lost in the shuffle of other masculine superheroes this summer is up to Hub viewers, but at least the creators of "SheZow" are taking a lighthearted approach. When Guy finds the magic ring, the secret phrase he must say to transform into SheZow is -- what else? -- "You go, girl!"
