Issa Rae To Portray Nina Simone In New Biopic

Up-and-coming filmmaker and actress, Issa Rae has been tapped to portray Nina Simone in the forthcoming "unconventional biopic" on "A Raisin in the Sun" author and playwright, Lorraine Hansberry.

Shadow and Act reports that the developing film, which has yet to receive an official title, will be directed by Numa Perrier and will also star Hansberry’s grandniece, Taye, in the lead role, and Jaleel White as James Baldwin.

Additional casting for the project is expected to be announced in the coming weeks by “Scandal” casting director, Will Stewart, with production slated for early Fall.

As previously reported, the “Awkward Black Girl” creator is set to make her debut into network television as the writer and co-producer of Shonda Rhimes’ upcoming ABC Network comedy series, "I Hate L.A. Dudes" and "The Mix."
