Santa Monica High School Students Ask Obama To Graduation Ceremony (VIDEO)

Will This Work On Obama?

It isn't exactly a promposal, but it's close.

Students from Santa Monica High School in California have taken to YouTube to invite President Barack Obama to their graduation ceremony. And while it doesn't have the romance of, say, asking a supermodel to prom, they still make a pretty sweet argument for why Obama should take time from his already-scheduled Democratic Party fundraiser nearby to meet with the SaMo High class of 2013.

Our favorite reasons include their group of 21 valedictorian candidates (one of the largest in the school's history) and the fact that this year, the school is graduating its hundredth class of seniors.

But perhaps what makes these students oh-so-special is their show of love and unity in the face of bigotry and hate. Last February, members of the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church picketed the campus because of the school's support for LGBT students. Hundreds of high schoolers and community members showed up with signs of their own, saying "God Cares for All Creation" and "Ain't Nobody Got Time For Hate."

"Our student body came together to form a wall of community," said one student in the video above, "inclusive of all genders, races and sexual orientations," another continued.

The video was the brainchild of 17-year-old senior students Sam Modabber and Nikki Bell. After making the short film, they promoted it on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #getobamatothegreek (the school's auditorium is named Memorial Greek Amphitheatre). The campaign even got a tweet from the school's celebrity alumni Carson Daily, notes LA Weekly.

While the White House hasn't responded to the video appeal, it's not looking like the students will get their wish. Obama's official itinerary has him arriving at LAX at 10:35 a.m. on Friday and leaving by 2:05 p.m. the same day. The graduation ceremony starts at 5 p.m.

Still, as previous trips to California have shown, the President has a track record of surprising his constituents with stops at Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles in Los Angeles or Great Eastern dim sum in San Francisco.

Plus, even though Milken High School student Jake Davidson's promposal swimsuit model Kate Upton was eventually turned down, he got a very good consolation prize: Danish supermodel Nina Agdal as his prom date. Maybe Vice-President Joe Biden is free this Friday?
