'Today' Plaza Evacuated After Man Tries To Hurt Himself (VIDEO)

'Today' Evacuated After Scary Incident

A man attempted to hurt himself with a knife outside the "Today" show on Thursday morning, prompting the anchors and members of the crowd to be evacuated from the plaza.

The show tweeted:

"There was an incident out on the plaza," Matt Lauer told viewers on air. TV Newser's Alex Weprin reported that a man had tried to slit his wrists. The plaza was evacuated, and the anchors moved into the studio, where they resumed the show.

Weprin spoke to one person on the plaza who said that "police responded very quickly." One eyewitness captured footage (WARNING: GRAPHIC) of an enforcement official tackling a man in a baseball cap behind a metal barricade to the ground.

Later, Lauer tweeted that the plaza was "secure" and that the man is "in police custody."
