SPOILER ALERT: Do not read the following article unless you have watched up to the recent "Game of Thrones" episode, "The Rains of Castamere."
This season of "Game Of Thrones" has been... brutal.
We've seen betrayals, battles and murders throughout the third season, culminating in the "Red Wedding" episode which inspired a whole Twitter account dedicated to outraged responses.
It's been a bad season for almost every character, but the women in the series have continued to hold their own -- despite being faced with punishing marriages and men who don't take them seriously. Yes, there are plenty of "GoT" women who function as gratuitous entertainment -- see Jezebel's "Game of Boners" feature for proof -- but there are also some incredibly complex female characters in the series. Although some of them didn't make it through the season (R.I.P. Ros, Catelyn and Talisa), even the most down-on-their-luck women of Westeros are learning to work with the hands they've been dealt.
Slate has been keeping tabs on every character's best (and worst) moments in their weekly "Game of Thrones" lady power rankings, and our friends over at HuffPost TV created a supercut of some particularly badass scenes. In preparation for the season finale, which airs on Sunday, we wanted to share our favorite women-centric Season 3 moments in the best medium we could think of -- the GIF.
1. Every time Olenna Tyrell (née Redwyne) spoke the uncensored truth.
Whether she's chatting with her granddaughter, confronting Tywin Lannister or scolding Varys, the matriarch of the Tyrell family always speaks her mind. "I was told you were drunk, impertinent and thoroughly debauched," she told Tyrion in the episode "Kissed By Fire." "You can imagine my disappointment at finding nothing but a browbeaten bookkeeper." Burn.
2. When Ygritte said this.
That was a serious threat... and we kind of believe she would follow through with it.
3. When Margaery made Joffrey confront an unruly crowd.
This Highgarden noble has the king under her thumb, making him believe that he is beloved both by her and by his public. He's too proud to see that neither of those things are true.
4. Every time Melisandre got a man to believe her.
We're kind of conflicted about Melisandre -- she's one of the least relatable female characters on the show, and frankly we're a little scared of her. But her power over people is astonishing, and it's hard not to respect that.
5. Basically everything Daenerys did this season.
She freed the slaves of Astapor, made Daario Naharis swear allegiance to her while she was in the bathtub and won over a whole army of Unsullied. Daenerys has never been more powerful.
6. When Cersei slapped Joffrey.
Cersei has been more manipulated than manipulator this season, and as she watched her power over Joffrey dissipate she became more and more furious. This slap was a long time coming, and we're pretty glad it happened.
7. When Brienne showed Jaime who was boss.
Granted, Jaime was slightly impaired, but Brienne proved herself as a swords(wo)man and finally earned some of his respect.
The women on "Game of Thrones" are what makes the series so incredible, and what keep its fan base coming back week after week.
So, overall we've got to say that Arya was wrong when she said this:
We're pretty sure that all of the women she shares the small screen with would beg to differ.
