A disturbing video which allegedly shows New York police officers attacking three gay men has riled local advocacy organizations.
The Village Voice cites one of the victims, identified as 26-year-old Josh Williams, who says he was beaten outside the 79th police precinct in Brooklyn around 4 a.m. on June 2 by police officers who made homosexual slurs.
The incident, which is under investigation by NYPD Internal Affairs, sparked after an officer accused one of three men of urinating on the outside of the police station, according to the report.
Williams reportedly suffered a black eye, bruised ribs, a scrape on his chest and a laceration on his face requiring four stitches. Williams and roommates Tony Maenza and Ben Collins, both 24, were also arrested. Maenza also filmed a portion of the incident, video of which can be found above, according to the Voice.
Denouncing the alleged attack, the New York City Anti-Violence Project has announced plans for June 11 press conference. You can find details of the press conference here.
New York, of course, has experienced what appears to be a series of anti-gay attacks in recent months. On May 18, 32-year-old Brooklyn resident Mark Carson was fatally shot in the head while walking through the West Village. Alleged culprit Elliot Morales reportedly referred to Carson and his companion as "gay wrestlers" prior to the shooting.
Carson's case, which is being investigated as a hate crime, follows an alleged attack on another gay man just outside of another popular New York hotspot. ABC 7 reports that the victim, who was not identified, was coming out of the West Village gay bar Pieces when he was attacked by two men who were yelling gay slurs. He was not seriously hurt.
