"The Voice" may not be the only singing competition on television, but may have become the most popular. After new coaches Shakira and Usher joined the show for Season 4, "The Voice" beat powerhouse "American Idol" in the ratings for the first time. While "The Voice" executive producer Mark Burnett has his theories, Shakira recently revealed her own ideas as to how and why it happened.
In this video from "Oprah's Next Chapter," Oprah asks Usher and Shakira if it was their presence that accounts for their show beating "American Idol." Shakira explains that it might come down to a simple word: chemistry.
"I do feel that there is a special chemistry between us four," Shakira tells Oprah about her fellow coaches. "We just have fun… It's very genuine... Whatever you see on TV, it's exactly what's happening."
"Really?" Oprah says. "So, nothing is scripted?"
"Nothing," Shakira says. "We get along."
Of course, "The Voice" is a competition, so how do the four friendly coaches handle vying for their singer to win? "I feel like it's like a Monopoly game, almost," Shakira says. "When you get together with your friends and you play some Monopoly, that's what it is like. There is the competitiveness and all of that, but at the end of the day, we're here because we want to have a good time and we enjoy what we're doing."
"The Voice" airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
"Oprah's Next Chapter" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET on OWN.
